The sunnah (practices of the Prophet) is a basic source of Islam and has an important role and many implications in the believers' daily life; as such it is important that the many studies that have been carried out should be properly understood. When studies on understanding sunnah are examined, explanation of the language and content come to the fore. A significant number of studies include gharib al-hadith, nasikh and mansukh al-hadith, mukhtalif al-hadith, mushkil al-hadith, muhkam al hadith, asbab al-wurud hadith, fiqh al-hadith.

The word "hadith" is the name of an infinitive meaning "to explain, inform, the thing explained/informed about, news, and words." The word was taken from this broad dictionary meaning and began to be used for some special news. Thus, in time this particular meaning developed which relates to news about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This news includes everything about the Prophet such as his words, actions, states, etc. When "hadith" is mentioned, this is the primary meaning understood. Sometimes in order to make the term clearer, it is used together with the word "exalted." Together with this, undoubtedly after the meaning of the word was established, it continued to be used with its dictionary meanings.

It might also be said that this sunnah of the Prophet, who was the last of the prophets and best example for all humanity, is both a practical application of the Quran in a particular historical setting and a universal and meta-historical interpretation of it.

The question of the value of the hadith literature (sayings of the Prophet) as a legitimate source is a broad one in which orientalists, not only those working on hadiths, but also those in other areas, including Islamic law, Islamic history and the Quran, are interested. For this reason, the discussion here needs to be limited according to some parameters.
