Friday Sermon - The Unity of the Qur'an and the Sunna

Esteemed Muslims!

Almighty Allah created man as the most perfect of creatures. With the intellect first and foremost, He has honored mankind with so many blessings -- such as thought, understanding, and the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. Allah the Almighty did not stop there, and delivered His messages to mankind through prophets, beginning with Adam (p.b.u.h.), who was the first man and first prophet. In addition to delivering the divine commandments to mankind in their original form, the prophets implemented these commandments in their own lives, serving as the best role models for the communities to which they were sent.[1] The last of the prophets was Muhammad (p.b.u.h.). The Prophet Muhammad delivered the revelation sent to him, and explained the verses to the people both verbally and through his actions. In addition to this, he applied the commands of the Qur’an, setting an example for his followers.[2]

Esteemed Muslims!

In order for us to understand our religion well, we must know very well both our book, the Holy Qur’an, and the Sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.). It is impossible to think of our Prophet separately from the Qur’an. Let us not forget that it was our Prophet who explained the Qur’an and taught us how to perform acts of worship. For Allah the Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an: “With clear proofs and writings; and We have revealed unto thee the Remembrance that thou mayst explain to mankind that which hath been revealed for them, and that haply they may reflect.”[3]

And our Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) said: “I leave for you two things and as long as you hang on tightly to them, you will not sway into deviance. These are the book of Allah and my Sunnah.”[4]

Esteemed Muslims!

Obedience to the Prophet is obedience to Allah. And the path to loving Allah runs through allegiance to the Prophet. The path to happiness in this world and the next lies in espousing the two trusts our Prophet left behind: the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

I would like to conclude my khutbah with the 32nd verse of Surah Ali Imran: “Say: Obey Allah and the messenger. But if they turn away, lo! Allah loveth not the disbelievers (in His guidance).”
