Prophet Muhammad subject of Trinity University lecture series

Sep 03,2011

Emerging research into the historic sources used to understand the Prophet Muhammad will be a main theme in a series of free lectures this fall at Trinity University.

The yearly Lennox Lecture Series will bring in academic experts on Islam's founder, its history and contemporary debates. Speakers also will touch on how U.S. Muslims have fared as the nation approaches the 10th anniversary of 9-11.

The series, called “A Decade After 9/11: Muhammad in history, politics and memory,” kicks off with Fred Donner, a University of Chicago professor of Near Eastern history and author of “Muhammad and the Believers: at the origins of Islam.”

Donner will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Coates University Center's Fiesta Room on “New Views of Muhammad and Early Islam.”

History and religious studies professor Jonathan Brockopp of Penn State will speak on Oct. 6, followed by religious studies professor Jamal Elias on Nov. 3 and humanities professor Amila Buturovic of York University in Toronto on Dec. 6.

All lectures begin at 7 p.m. Buturovic's speech will be at Ruth Taylor Recital Hall, while the rest will be in the Fiesta Room.

God's Messenger kissed Al-Hasan bin Ali (his grandchild) while Al-Aqra' bin Habis At-Tamim was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra said, "I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of them", God's Messenger cast a look at him and said, "Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully."
