Prophet Muhammad, God’s Messenger and the last prophet, was born in the city of Makka. Makka is in the west of the Arabian Peninsula, lying between Asia, Europe and Africa, within the Hejaz region. It is important to be aware of the history of Makka, the Ka’ba and the Quraysh tribe in to understand the life of the Prophet.

The lineage of Prophet Muhammad can be traced back to Prophet Ishmael, the son of Abraham, through Adnan, a descendent twenty-one generations removed.

Prophet Muhammad was born in the city of Makka, which is located in the Hijaz region on the western part of the Arabian Peninsula.

After his birth, Prophet Muhammad stayed with his mother Amina for a while and then, as per tradition, was handed over to his wet-nurse.

Khadija was the daughter of Khuwaylid ibn Asad, a prominent member of the Quraysh. Her grandfather Qusay was related to ancestors of Prophet Muhammad. Khadija, who was married twice before marrying the Prophet, was a noble, beautiful and rich woman.

The Prophet Muhammad’s arbitration between the major clans of the Quraysh tribe during the renovation of the Ka’ba, when he was thirty-five years old carries great importance.

In the year 610, during the last ten days of the month of Ramadan, when Prophet Muhammad was in Hira, Archangel Gabriel appeared to him.

A break in revelation occurred for some time following the first revelation. The interruption that Divine revelation underwent when the gravity and difficulty of the first revelation had scarcely passed caused Prophet Muhammad great anxiety.

With the Divine command to convey God’s message to the people, Prophet Muhammad now started to invite those around him to the religion of Islam. This invitation continued for up to three years in secret.

The public invitation to Islam started in Makka after the fourth year of Prophethood. The Prophet Muhammad’s first and most important addressees were the Quraysh.

As Islam gradually spread in Makka, the attitudes of the Makkan polytheists towards the Muslims became even harsher and their verbal opposition was now joined with physical intervention.

The Quraysh decided to counteract the power of influence that the Prophet gained with Hamza and ‘Umar’s acceptance of Islam.

In the tenth year of Prophethood, the Prophet’s uncle Abu Talib, who had given him constant support, and his wife Khadija, with whom he had shared a happy life for twenty-five years, passed away only three days apart from one another.

In the period spanning the tenth year of Prophethood until the Emigration, the Prophet turned his focus outside Makka in communicating the message of Islam to the people. Taking Zayd ibn Harith with him, the Prophet went to Ta’if where the Thaqif tribe lived.

Following both the death of loved ones who were always of great support to him and the cruelties inflicted by the Ta’if townspeople, God honored Prophet Muhammad with the Ascension, allowing him to travel to the spiritual realms.

From the first years of his Prophethood, Prophet Muhammad showed great efforts to convey the message to those coming to Makka for pilgrimage as well as those coming to the city’s fairs for trade.

After the second Aqabah pledge to Prophet Muhammad, he gave permission to his companions to emigrate (hijrah) to Yathrib.

The Emigration constitutes a very important event which allowed Prophet Muhammad to fulfill his duties of Prophethood under more auspicious conditions and which enabled the spread of Islam.

The Battle of Badr, alongside the Battle of Uhud and the Battle of the Trench to occur later, constitutes one of the most famous battles in the struggle that Prophet Muhammad pursued against the Makkan polytheists.

At the time when Prophet Muhammad emigrated to Madina, virtually half of the city’s population consisted of Jews from the Banu Nadir, Banu Qaynuqa and Banu Qurayza tribes.

Prophet Muhammad did not want to fight the Quraysh – filled with the hatred and animosity of the Age of Ignorance and wanting to avenge Badr – outside Madina. However, upon the insistence of some youth who had not participated in Badr and some of the Helpers angered by the enemy forces’ destruction of their fields and orchards, the Prophet decided to set off for Uhud.

Several months after the Battle of Uhud, a delegation from the Adal and al-Qarah tibes came to Madina and, stating that Islam had begun to spread within their tribes, requested that Prophet Muhammad send representatives to them who could teach them how to read the Qur’an and about Islam.

A short time after the Raj’i incident (4 Safar/July 625), chief of the Amir ibn Sa'sa' tribe Abu Bara' Amir ibn Malik came to Madina and obtained information about Islam from Prophet Muhammad.

The Banu Nadir was one of the three Jewish tribes in Medina; the people lived in a strong fortresses and they possessed large date fields and were mostly occupied with agriculture.

While the Khuda'a tribe, generally speaking, adopted a positive stance towards Islam and Prophet Muhammad, the Banu Mustaliq clan sided with the Quraysh, who were at war with the Muslims, and demonstrated their hostility at every opportunity.

When Prophet Muhammad left Madina for the Banu Mustaliq Campaign, he took his wife ‘A’isha with him. On the return to Madina, during preparations to resume the journey after having stopped at a resting place, ‘A’isha noticed that she had dropped the Yemeni agate necklace that her older sister or mother had given to her and retraced her steps in order to find it.

The Battle of the Trench was the last attack of the Quraysh on Medina. The name of this battle comes from the trenches that were dug around Medina to prevent enemy attack.

After the Banu Qaynuqa and the Banu Nadir’s banishment from the city on account of their violation of the terms of the treaty and their betraying Prophet Muhammad, remaining in Madina were the Banu Qurayza Jews.

The Treaty of Hudaybiya, initially not viewed as favorable for the Muslims, was in actual fact the greatest political success of Prophet Muhammad, and was confirmed by the Qur’an as such.

Prophet Muhammad sent these letters with the purpose of conveying the message of Islam to many tribal leaders and sometimes even to individuals living in various parts of the Arabian Peninsula.

Khaybar, located in the vast valley which stretched from 180 kilometers to Madina’s north and on the road between Madina and Syria, was an important center of trade and agriculture populated by Jews. After the Treaty of Hudabiya, Prophet Muhammad began to take into account the threat that Khaybar posed for the Muslims.

Mu’ta is located to the south of Lake Galilee, 50 kilometers from the city of Jerusalem. At the beginning of the eighth year after the Emigration (629 AD), Prophet Muhammad sent Harith ibn 'Umayr with a letter of invitation to Islam to the provincial governor of Busra, under the Byzantine Empire.

With the conquest of Makka, the hostility of the Qurayshi polytheists towards Prophet Muhammad and the Muslims came to an end and the obstacles in the way of the spread of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula’s Hijaz region were lifted.

The enmity between the Hawazin and the Quraysh, due in large part to trade relations and continuing from the Age of Ignorance had now been directed towards Prophet Muhammad – who was also from the Quraysh – and the religion of Islam that he conveyed.

Ta’if became somewhat a safe house for the enemy. Hence, the Hawazin who were defeated at Awtas also sought shelter here. Immediately after the Battle of Hunayn, Prophet Muhammad decided to advance upon Ta’if with an army that he himself led.

In the ninth year after the Emigration (630 AD), news reached Madina that Byzantine Emperor Heraclius had begun preparations for war against the Muslims, gaining the support of allied Arab Christian tribes such as the Banu Lakhm, Djudham, ‘Amila and the Ghassan.

The ninth year of the Emigration (630-631) is known as the Year of Delegations (sanat al-wufud). The delegations coming to Madina on behalf of their tribes and meeting with Prophet Muhammad declared their acceptance of Islam, pledged allegiance both in their own name and in the name of their tribes, wanted to the learn the religion from the Messenger conveying it himself, and sometimes requested that teachers be sent to members of their tribes.

After Makka’s conquest, Prophet Muhammad made agreements with polytheistic tribes such as the Khuda’a and Mudlij – as he had made with those neighboring Madina such as the Damra, Ghifar, Juhayna and Ashja’ from the first year after the Emigration onwards – which ensured the freedom and safety of those visiting the Ka’ba for the major and minor pilgrimage and which guaranteed that no one would be in fear during the sacred months.

Prophet Muhammad started preparations for the major pilgrimage and wanted all Muslims to attend.

After his return to Madina from the Farewell Pilgrimage, Prophet Muhammad’s health began to decline. During the days of his illness he visited the graves of the Uhud martyrs and performed the funeral prayer. Leaving his house on another night, he went to Madina’s graveyard and entreated God’s forgiveness for those buried there.

‘Masterpieces of the Calligraphy Art Hilya al-Sharif,’ that opened at the Yıldız Palace Mabeyn Köşk, is displaying nearly 100 examples of traditional calligraphic art.

Even God’s Messenger, who said, “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much,” laughed at times. In actual fact, his face would light up with his smile and mercy, like the precious stone, mother-of-pearl.

This song, sung by Nader Khan, is the English translation of a poem written by Yunus Emre (1240-1320), one of the most famous Sufi poets who has made a great impact on the Turkish-Muslim culture. This poem is at essence an entreaty to God, by means of the intercession of those things and people that are deemed to be close to God Almighty.
 

The significance of BBC Two’s broadcast of the first episode of the documentary, the Life of Muhammad, who the BBC describes as “a man who - for the billion and half Muslims across the globe - is the messenger and final prophet of God” is palpable.

Notwithstanding its shortcomings, in this episode the audience does get a feel for some of the extraordinary ways in which the Prophet Muhammad changed the society in which he found himself and the drastic breaking away that he trailblazed.

The third and final installment of the Life of Muhammad documentary aired on BBC Two recently presented the latter stages of the Prophet Muhammad’s life and explored the extent to which his life and actions are reflected in today’s world.
