Jonathan Brown and Ahmad Vincenzo in Turkey

The Meridyen Association's project to understand and introduce Prophet Muhammad to the world through lastprophet.info continues with international projects. Abdal Hakim Murad (Timothy Winters) from Cambridge University, Jonathan Brown from Washington University and Ahmad Vincenzo, the author of Spring in Yathrib, will be in Turkey this month as guests of the Meridyen Association Panel: "How to Introduce Our Prophet to the World."

In line with Meridyen's latest project, a panel entitled, "How to Introduce Our Prophet to the world", will take place at the Bağlarbaşı Cultural Center in Üsküdar on Saturday, 10 April, 2010.

On the discussion panel, which will be moderated by Dr. Recep Şentürk, Abdal Hakim Murad will discuss "Prophet Muhammad according to Islamic Tradition", while Jonathan Brown will talk about "The West's Approach to Prophet Muhammad." Ahmad Vincenzo will share his insights on "Using Artistic and Literary Resources to Discuss Our Prophet."

The panel, which will be open to the public, will be simultaneously translated.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Ahmad Vincenzo was born in Naples in 1961 and chose to enter Islam in the presence of Sheikh Abdul Wahid Pallavicini in 1990 after a journey of long and in-depth religious research. Vincenzo, who is considered to be a leading representative of Italian Muslims, lives in Milan and is one of the founders of the Intellettuali Musulmani Italiani (Italian Muslim Intellectuals).

Vincenzo continues to give lessons at  Frederico 2nd University in Naples. Vincenzo's book "Il Libro Disceso Dal Cielo", which was translated into Turkish as  "Yesrib'de Bahar" (Spring in Yathrib) describes the life of Prophet Muhammad in literary language; the book has also been translated into German under the title "Das buch das vom Himmel kam." Vincenzo has also published another work entitled "Islam, l'atra civilita" (Islam, the other civilization).

Who is Dr. Jonathan A.C. Brown?

Jonathan Brown, who graduated from Georgetown University's faculty of history in 2000 with a thesis entitled, "Islam and the Muslims understanding of Christianity," completed his doctoral studies at University of Chicago's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, presenting a thesis on Islamic Philosophy. Brown worked as the advisory editor to the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World from 2005-2008 and the Oxford Online Islamic Studies Bibliography between 2008 and 2009. He currently works as a faculty member and researcher at Washington University, Near East Civilization-Islamic Research Department, while continuing to work as the editor-in-chief for the Oxford Encyclopedia on Islamic Jurisprudence. Brown has also conducted various studies in Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Iran.

Who is Dr. Recep Şenturk?

Dr. Recep Şenturk is currently an instructor at Fatih University, Faculty of Administrative and Commercial Studies, Department of Public Administration; he also works as a researcher at the Turkish Religious Foundation Center for Islamic Research (ISAM), and graduated from Marmara University's Faculty of Divinity (1986). After completing his masters at Istanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Sociology in 1988, Dr Şenturk worked as a research assistant in the same department for the following year before completing his doctorate at Columbia University in the United States in 1998. Following his graduation, Şenturk began working at ISAM as a researcher.

He then carried out research as a guest researcher at Emory University, Faculty of Law, in Atlanta between 2002 and 2003. Dr. Şenturk continued his research, by invitation from the British Academy, at Oxford Brookes University Social Sciences Faculty, as well as giving lectures at various universities in England. He has had books and articles published in Turkish, English and Arabic.
